Supporting Children During Violence and Tragedy

As administrator members of CCOSA, the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administrators, CCOSA provides us professional support, mentoring, and professional learning to assist us in our jobs.  We want to share the following statement in which CCOSA has provided us content and resources to support our faculty, staff, and community during the recent school violence tragedy.

To the community, faculty, and staff of  Pawhuska Public Schools:

Our hearts are heavy as we grieve with the families, students, teachers and community of Parkland, Florida. There have been 18 senseless school shootings since January. Our schools have always been safe havens for our students, and as educators, we remain committed to that promise in spite of these recent tragedies.

In the wake of the recent school violence event, we want to share some resources to help educators and parents address the sadness and fear that many students may be feeling. This infographic from the National Association of School Psychologists provides tips on how to provide children with a sense of normalcy and security after high profile violent acts. The NASP has several other relevant resources on their website.

Here are several additional resources from the American School Counselor Association, including webinars on crisis and a host of other tip sheets and websites.

We send wishes for strength and love to our counterparts in Florida and educators all over the country who care for and protect our students every day. We will reinforce with our students that if they "see something, say something."  We will review our building crisis management plans as we conduct our school safety drills.  We will seek professional support to address safety in our schools.  We recognize that students and teachers may need some extra attention in the coming days and weeks.

Our principals, staff, and maintenance personnel are asked to be relentless about those individuals entering our buildings and on our campuses.

In the wake of this tragedy and as your superintendent of schools,  let's reach towards each other to support and recognize our unique community and needs.  In our hearts and minds, we are united in the abundant love we share for the children of our community.

To our faculty and staff, thank you for being heroes for your students today and every day in the Pawhuska Public Schools.  We are indebted to your service.
